Elements of Transition

Those of you who are interested in Transition Fort Collins know that the movement is a response to Peak Oil, Climate Change, a Post Carbon world, Energy Descent [possibly rapid which could lead to civil unrest.] Relocalization is a mature thoughtful thing for transitioners to support. See 10 Good Reasons to Shop Local. I am happy to tell you that there is a new Rocky Mountain Olive Oil Company at 114 North College Avenue. They were doing a great business. The Cupboard Blog and awsome Sarah Jane’s I Love Kale have recently been added to our lynx. We ran into a gentleman from ThisEfficientHouse.com. They do home energy audits, insulation, air sealing and more. That is definitely worth a lynx. We have recently added The Growing Project, CanDoOnline, Front Range Permaculture Institute, and RealFoodColorado to our lynx. We promised Mama at MamaSaidSEW that we would add a lynx. They sell fabrics, sewing notions and give lessons. The shop is located at 121 E. Mountain Avenue Old Town Fort Collins.

Fort Collins is in election season

We have added Ross Cunniff for Mayor, Lisa Poppaw, and Kristin Stephens See followup story Candidates Forum via League of Women Voters.

Matter Daily Covers Food Townhall Meeting

Story here. by Beth Kopp She said there were about 80 people there. Good to know because the meeting was in their building. I couldn’t hear all the presentations so I’m glad to see Beth’s story. One thing for sure, the enthusiasm was wonderful to experience. I enjoyed a great conversation with Hill Grimmett of BeLocalNC.org. Good because I correspond more often with Gailmarie. Speaking of great conversations, I really enjoyed talking to Valerie Kaminiski of NC Green Menu. We put in a lynx for her. Valerie has done an enormous amount of work on worthwhile Fort Collins links to restaurants offering healthy food choices.

Date and Location:

November 9–10, 2010

NTSB Conference Center

Short Description:

On November 9–10, 2010, the National Transportation Safety Board is holding a public forum on Safety, Mobility, and Aging Drivers. This forum will be held in the NTSB Board Room at L’Enfant Plaza in Washington, DC. It will be open for public attendance and also available by webcast.

The forum will kick off with a discussion of safety metrics – accidents, injury, and fatalities – to help us understand the transportation risks associated with aging. An occupant protection panel will explore the details of decreased injury tolerance with age and the complications associated from recovery given a crash injury. It will be followed by a highway and vehicle design panel that will discuss the infrastructure and vehicle design efforts to improve the performance of aging drivers.

The second day of the forum will begin with consideration of the ways we can assess driver capability, both in terms of mental and physical abilities. The forum will close with a panel that looks at the variety of State Department of Motor Vehicle licensing approaches that have been enacted by state legislatures in recent years.

The Board recognizes that not all stakeholders were represented in person at the aging driver forum. Because it was not possible to accommodate everyone who wanted to participate, those individuals and organizations who wish to submit written comments may do so until November 30, 2010. Please submit your comments to mailto: agingdriver@ntsb.gov.

The material here is from the NTSB Official Website But if you do submit comments they are mail-bounced as “unknown user” …

Bottom line: The NTSB National Transportation Board is so incompetent they cannot even get a mailto address working on their website. No wonder the public thinks that the federal government is ineffective and that we pay too much for it.

RFC 3463 and RFC 5248

Request for Comments (RFC) 3463 was published in January 2003 and is titled “Enhanced Mail System Status Codes”. This RFC was updated in June 2008 by RFC 5248 which describes current best practices. They were adopted in order to address deficiencies in error messages coming from SMTP Simple Mail Transfer Protocol. The objective is to produce more informative error messages when mail cannot be delivered. My best estimate of the situation is that someone at NTSB forgot to establish a mailbox for agingdriver. RFC 3463 indicates that there should be a mailbox for postmaster@ntsb.gov … we shall see if there is.

Astronomy Picture of The Day was added in honor of my sister. See Sis You’re No Valley Girl on this blog. Our links are divided into Blogroll, Public Interest, and Science and Stuff which includes computer science, BOINC, climate science, wind, and other things. Notice the link for Junk Science Judo. This material was produced by The Cato Institute and I think it is valuable. More recent material produced by The Cato Institute seems to me to be excessively negative.

I am struck by the number of bloggers appearing on cable television. For example on Howard Kurtz’s Reliable Sources on CNN there appeared Jeff Jarvis blogger at Buzz Machine as well as John Aravosis blogger at America Blog. I’m happy to have both on my blogroll. Speaking of happy, I was glad to see Jane Hamsher, blogger at Fire Dog Lake, on The Rachel Maddow show recently.

Do you remember the old days when the Internet and World Wide Web were not considered to be the same thing? Back then people would create a web site with a links page which might go on and on. Some webmasters would give us a break by producing an anotated list of links.

Comes now the Gypsy Chief Blog. We decided to introduce links slowly and maybe say a few words about each one.

For example realnightmare.org has undergone significant changes as of late. I suggest you log on to see what’s new. RealID seems to me to be the poster child for government boondoggle. My interest in this was sparked when I discovered that the ACLU and The Cato Institute as well as The American Library Association all oppose RealID. CNBC anchor Larry Kudlow has been heard to support RealID but it seems to me his support is based on the notion that people with Real IDs would be first in line at the airport. Sorry, Larry, we can’t all be first in line at the same time. Look for more links coming soon.
